The Best of the Worst: Our Favorite Arch Rivals

Every good detective need a good arch nemesis, a villain to vanquish, someone to cook up evil schemes for our hero to foil. And we certainly love to hate them as well. Here are three of our favorite fictional bad guys.

Professor James Moriarty. Perhaps the most famous nemesis of all time to the most famous fictional detective of all time, the “Napoleon of Crime” of Sherlock Holmes describes him has been the mastermind behind countless plots in the world of Sherlock Holmes adaptations, this despite only featuring prominently in a small handful of the original books.


Dr. Hannibal Lecter. At times antagonist, at times protagonist, Hannibal Lecter’s relationships to the various investigators he finds himself engaged with can be complicated at times. Though perhaps best remembered for his interactions with Clarice Starling, Lecter’s encounters with the law created conflicts with characters such as Will Graham and Jack Crawford as well.

The Joker. While Batman had many nemeses throughout his decades of crime fighting, none amassed the same body count as the Joker, and for all the times the caped crusader managed to bring him down, Batman could never stoop to the Joker’s level and put an end to his terror once and for all. It’s this final fact that truly defined Batman and solidified The Joker as his arch nemesis. Just don’t mention this to Ra’s Al Ghul...
